Recently, there’s been a shift toward modifying HVAC efficiency requirements to SEER2 to revolutionize the industry so that units are better at cooling, relying on less energy. What Is SEER2?

SEER2 is the new seasonal energy efficient ratio, which refers to the energy consumed for your heating and cooling system over an entire year to evaluate overall equipment performance. When calculating the numerical value, the ratio measures the total heat removed from an air-conditioned space, expressed in Btu, divided by the total electrical energy consumed (from the AC or heat pump) during the season (in watt-hours). 

While SEER (the old efficiency standard) has been a dominant force in decision-making for HVAC systems in the past, these qualifications have recently changed. As of January 1, 2023, the Department of Energy (DOE) enacted all new units to be SEER2 compliant regardless of the state or local code. These new standards call for a minimum of 14 SEER on all HVAC (14.3 SEER2 equivalent).

With this, testing protocols have been updated and improved to include higher external static pressures and are meant to represent real-life usage better to maximize accuracy. Unlike SEER, SEER 2 evaluations will look for coil-only units’ fan power, heat load calculations, heating modes, off modes, and variable speed factors. However, it’s essential to know that these requirements differ slightly in Southern regions of the United States. 

SEER2 Compliance

The DOE does not allow “sell-through,” or selling and installing products meeting old efficiency requirements in the Southeast and Southwest. In the North, compliance is based on the date of manufacture, while the other two regions are based on the date of installation for AC products and the date of manufacture for heat pumps.
