Single-zone systems are designed to serve a single room with one outdoor condenser linked to one indoor head. Multi-zone pumps connect two or more coils inside your home to one condenser. This allows you to cool or heat multiple spaces. 

How do Heat Pumps Work?

A heat pump’s refrigeration system has a compressor and two copper coils (one inside and one outside), containing aluminum fins to aid heat transfer. To cool, warm air from your home is passed along a refrigerant coil, which is absorbed by the liquid refrigerant and evaporates into a low-temperature gas. Then, the cool air distributes throughout the house. 

After, the low-temp gas refrigerant goes through a compressor, raising its temperature and pressure. The hot, high-pressure refrigerant passes through the outdoor coil. Finally, the refrigerant releases heat into the surrounding air. 

In heating mode, the same process happens, but in reverse. Additionally, the pump can alter the direction of the refrigerant flow for cooling or heating mode using a reversing valve near the compressor.

Next, the high-pressure refrigerant releases using an expansion valve. Once the pressure reduces, the low-temperature refrigerant is pumped through the house.
